Drew Barrymore has revealed that she was "terrified" about screening her film Whip It for Steven Spielberg.

The roller derby movie, which stars Ellen Page, is the actress's directorial debut. It was distributed through Fox Searchlight and her Flower Films production company.

The 34-year-old, who played Gertie in Spielberg's blockbuster 1982 hit E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, said that she was filled with trepidation at the prospect of sharing her work with him.

She told Parade: "It was terrifying for me. But he gave me great notes. In the end, I followed every single one of them. But it was a long process of getting there.

"You just don't want to do what somebody says - even if it's Steven Spielberg."

Barrymore recently admitted that she had no idea how brutal the sport of roller derby is prior to directing her picture.
