The star is currently working on Eat, Pray, Love in Mirzarpur village, about 40 miles from the Indian capital New Delhi.
The Mirror reports that nearly 350 policemen and security guards have been hired to look after Roberts in the village and in the nearby town of Pataudi, where she is staying.
The guards, including some plainclothed officers, have been armed with bamboo sticks to keep visitors away from the filming.
Black screens have been erected to stop television crews and photographers gaining access to the set, but boys have reportedly climbed trees and rooftops to see Roberts.
Shooting began three days ago and started with prayers from a Hindu priest.
