DS spoke to Boyle recently for Slumdog Millionaire's DSMA victory and although he hasn't seen Tarantino's review, he was happy to give his thoughts on the director's latest Inglourious Basterds.
Danny Boyle on Inglourious Basterds...
"Excellent, really, really excellent. I did enjoy it very much, I wasn't expecting to. I think it was the way it came across in the press, but I really enjoyed it big time. I thought it was a brilliantly acted film, absolutely brilliant, with a very dangerous mix of people - mixing a German actor and a French actress, along with Americans, some of whom are playing Brits. You've got Michael Fassbender playing a Brit, it's a very bizarre mix of people yet it feels beautifully intended and formed and finished.
"As a director, [it's] often hard to make sure everybody feels like they're in the same film. It's one of the weird, key hidden jobs to make sure everyone's together. It's tricky sometimes because actors turn up and they've been on another film where they're playing something else and they've only got a couple of weeks with you before going on to another film. They can feel like strangers and they never really belong.
"He made it feel like everybody belonged; from a superstar like Brad Pitt all the way to an unknown Austrian actor, Christoph Waltz, who then went on to pick up the biggest prize at Cannes. It's a real tribute to him as a director, I took my hat off to him. I loved watching it, because just like Slumdog lots of it is subtitled, which normally they say can't work, that it'll make it an art movie."
