The actress told Parade that the comedy was unusual in that it showed the sides both of men and women rather than one or the other.
Akerman said: "The one thing that drew me to the script from the beginning was that it was about couples and real relationships, which you don't usually see in movies.
"Usually, it's the guys' club, or you have all the women together, like in Sex And The City."
She added: "I know people are always fascinated with Hollywood relationships where there does seem to be a lot of brief encounters.
"You see stars who get married two weeks after they meet, which, of course, is going to end up most likely in a divorce. I'd say maybe 2% of the time you'll end up having a fabulous, long-lived relationship. So you have to be careful and not just fall into something."
Earlier this year, Akerman told DS that she was happy to be "one of the guys" in the primarily male cast of superhero movie Watchmen.
