The project, which carries a budget of $7 million (£4.4 million), centres on a giant planet appearing close to Earth. Production company Zentropa Entertainment has insisted that the movie will not be an alien invasion tale.
"No more happy endings," joked von Trier, whose previous films include Dancer In The Dark, Dogville and Manderlay.
Peter Aalbaek Jensen, Meta Louise Foldager and Louise Vesth will produce the picture, which will shoot in Europe next year.
"As a disaster movie, Melancholia will use some special effects, but nothing compared to Hollywood," Aalbaek said.
