Tickets for the film, which is comprised of rehearsal footage for the late star's scheduled comeback tour at London's O2 arena, went on sale at the end of September.
Online ticket retailers Fandango and Movie Tickets have estimated that 1,600 screenings are already sold out in the US from pre-sale orders, MTV reports.
Sony Pictures will release the feature to a total of 8,500 screens worldwide, which will be circulated to 75 countries.
Concert promoter AEG, who financed the movie along with Columbia Pictures, expects the picture to bring in $250m (£167.5m) during its first five days of release.
The Dark Knight made $203m (£135.9m) during the same timeframe. However, the current concert film record holder is Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, grossing $70m (£46.9m) on a few hundred screens.
This Is It will debut in cinemas on Wednesday, October 28. It will also receive 15 simultaneous worldwide premieres on Tuesday, October 27.
