The actor will begin work on the project in March after he has finished shooting Columbia's cop comedy The Other Guys.
Rush penned the script and will make his directorial debut with the movie, which is based on a Raymond Carver story. Ferrell will play a man who loses his job and is locked out of his house by his wife. He spends the next four days attempting to sell his possessions in the front garden.
"Will is one of the best at making an audience sympathise with a character's ordeal, and the blending and comedy in this script will show a side of him that we haven't really seen before," said producer Marty Bowen.
