Director Joe Wright (The Soloist) was to direct the film, which centred on Edwina Mountbatten, wife of India's last viceroy of the British Indian Empire Lord Mountbatten, and her alleged affair with India's first post-independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru.
According to Variety, budget constraints and objections from the Indian government about the portrayal of the love affair have halted the project, which was to have cost around $40 million.
"We were in between a rock and a hard place," said Wright. "The Indian government wanted us to make less of the love story while the studio wanted us to make more of the love story."
Wright recently told DS that he hoped to film Indian Summer next February.
