Cary Fukunaga is in talks to direct a new Jane Eyre movie, reports Variety.

A BBC Films/Ruby Films co-production, the project has been adapted from Charlotte Bronte's novel by Tamara Drewe screenwriter Moira Buffini. Fukunaga recently directed the critically acclaimed Sin Nombre.

Ellen Page was previously attached to play Eyre, a governess who falls in love with the flawed Edward Rochester. Page, the Canadian star of Juno, reportedly sparked anger among UK film and TV industry insiders because they believed a Brit star should take on the role.

Jane Eyre is expected to begin production next year under the supervision of producers Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits.
