The pair, who are close friends in real life, are attached to Canal Plus's remake of the thriller, to be penned by Eastern Promises screenwriter Steven Knight, according to website Chud.
Carol Reed's 1949 movie centres on novelist Holly Martins as he arrives in Vienna to discover that the friend that invited him, Harry Lime, has died in a traffic accident. Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles starred in the original.
The Third Man currently sits at number 56 in the IMDb's user-ranked list of the top 250 films.
