The acting pair could join Big Lebowski star Jeff Bridges in the film, who is attached to play US marshal Rooster Cogburn, a role made famous by John Wayne in the original 1969 Western, says Variety. The Coens are eyeing Damon for the part of lawman La Boeuf (played by Glen Campbell in the original).
In the first movie, Cogburn and La Boeuf team up with a 14-year-old girl to track her father's killer. Brolin is in negotiations to play the murderer.
The Coens, who are producing the picture alongside Scott Rudin and Steven Spielberg, wrote the script, which is reportedly more faithful to the Charles Portis novel that inspired the 1969 film.
True Grit, a Paramount production, is expected to hit US cinemas in March 2010.
