Director Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of the Stephen King novel starred Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a hotel caretaker who slowly descends into insanity and becomes an axe-wielding madman by the movie's end. It was also notable for Nicholson's infamous line, "Here's Johnny!" as he breaks down a door with the weapon.
The picture also starred Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers in the tale of a young boy with psychic premonitions.
The movie bested such genre favourites as Halloween, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Jaws, Night Of The Living Dead and Rosemary's Baby to place first in the list compiled by Total Sci-Fi.
Meanwhile, Simon Cowell's brother Tony recently claimed that his sibling's first job was to clean the axe used in The Shining.
