Speaking to DS at the wartime drama's UK premiere, Poliakoff praised Brit actress Garai, calling her "sensational".
"I think she's the next Kate Winslet," said Poliakoff. "She's phenomenal. She's just had great success [in Emma] on TV and she was fabulous in Atonement. She is our next star, really."
Garai, 27, responded to Poliakoff's praise, remarking: "Did he say that? You see what he does there is make everything I do feel not as good as what I could be doing! Obviously I'm very thrilled and flattered but that is a very big shadow to stand in!"
Glorious 39 follows Garai's aspiring actress Anne Keyes as she uncovers a conspiracy to silence politicians opposing Britain's appeasement stance in the weeks leading to World War II.
The film opens in the UK on November 20.
