The Oscar-winning director has insisted that the character of Lena in his latest melodrama, starring Cruz, is the "saddest" role that he's ever written.
The 60-year-old told The New York Times: "Maybe the saddest character I ever wrote.
"She has a past she doesn’t like at all, so when she finds she can impersonate someone, it’s like having a new life. She is hard - a fallen angel. And that is the biggest challenge I have given Penelope so far."
Almodovar, who has admitted that he is attracted to Cruz despite being gay, has collaborated with the actress on four previous films, including Volver and 1997's Live Flesh.
Broken Embraces is currently playing in the UK and arrives in US cinemas on November 20.
