Speaking to journalists at the film's UK press conference, Carrey remarked that Sim, who took the role in 1951's Scrooge, was "born to play the part".
"There's an old saying that says, 'By the time you're 50 you have a face you deserve'," he said. "I have no idea what Alastair Sim did to get that face, but it was perfect for the part."
Released on Friday, director Robert Zemeckis's A Christmas Carol uses performance-capture technology to create a 3D rendering of Charles Dickens's classic story.
"That's the wonderful thing about this digital process is that I could be cast in films I'd never be cast in," Carrey added. "If I have it in my soul to play the character it doesn't matter what my face looks like and what my age is. It's really liberating."
