Mel Gibson has sold his UK distribution firm Icon to Russian-born tycoon Len Blavatnik.

Blavatnik's Access Industries purchased "more than a controlling stake in Icon UK" from Gibson and his partner Bruce Davey, Access head Alex Genin told Russian business newspaper Vedomosti.

Gibson released The Man Without A Face, The Passion Of The Christ and Apocalypto, all of which he directed, through Icon. The firm's upcoming slate includes The Road, Nowhere Boy and The Box.

The company has rights ownership to around 500 feature films, including Oscar-winning Western Dances With Wolves.

US citizen Blavatnik, believed to be worth $7 billion, previously spent $45 million (£27.6m) in 2005 for 50% ownership of Russian production company Amedia.
