The Forrest Gump director, whose adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is in cinemas now, said that he felt Carrey had all the skills required to play Ebenezer Scrooge in his 3D animated movie.
"I've always been a fan of Jim and I know that he's a wonderful actor, a great dramatic actor, a great character actor and very physical actor," Zemeckis told DS. "When he performs and uses every single muscle in his body to perform. I thought, 'That's what we need for motion capture cinema'."
Carrey takes on several roles in the festive film, including the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.
"When you have an actor who's as versatile as Jim you've got to put him to work," Zemeckis added. "You've got to use him anyway you can."
