The British actor, who plays Ebenezer Scrooge's nephew Fred in the newest incarnation of the story, told DS that Charles Dickens's tale of redemption has always connected with him.
He said: "I've never failed to be moved by A Christmas Carol in any version. Whether it's a television cartoon, the Muppets or Blackadder, there's always something very stirring about it.
"I think redemption stories, whatever culture you're in, they exist in one form or another - someone who's beyond hope somehow finding salvation by facing themselves. If that sort of thing is told well I think they become a thing that gets ritualised."
