Martin Scorsese has said that viewing films on Blu-ray offers "a completely different experience" from conventional DVDs.

The Oscar-winning director, who recently completed filming Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio, spoke about his fondness for the high definition format at a Blu-ray convention in Washington, DC.

The 66-year-old claimed that watching restored versions of older movies on Blu-ray is "like experiencing the film for the first time again".

He added: "I have a daughter who's 10, and she can't tell the difference between old films and new films. [Blu-ray] allows the film to be seen as closely as possible to how it was intended to be."

Scorsese is currently prepping his next film Silence for a 2011 release.
