According to Pajiba, the film will begin production in Europe next year with a budget of $25 million (£15 million).
No details are known about the film's plot, but the title refers to a dose of radiation that is strong enough to kill a man or make him sterile.
Abrams reportedly hatched the idea for the movie several months ago and hired his Lost and Fringe producer Jeff Pinkner to pen the script. Pinkner has now left the project to continue work on Fringe and Abrams is searching for new writers to finish the screenplay.
500 Rads will be the third movie produced by Abrams's Bad Robot company with Paramount. The firms previously released Cloverfield and Star Trek, which Abrams directed.
