The Forrest Gump helmer is working on the script for the remake, which will turn the 1968 animated film into a 3D performance-capture production. It is unknown if McCartney or Starr are willing to appear in or contribute voice work for the movie.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Zemeckis said: "We haven't gotten the word yet on the two surviving Beatles, whether they're interested in doing it or not."
McCartney, Starr and the rest of The Beatles did not voice their animated characters in the original. Instead, they appeared in a live-action sequence at the end.
Zemeckis's Yellow Submarine is slated for a 2012 release. A musical based on the film might also be on the horizon.
