He explained that 2012 is an extreme version of what people are currently frightened of.
"2012 taps into the paranoia around the world," he told Parade. "Everybody sort of knows where the problems are, but they might be exaggerated in this case. I don't think it will all end suddenly, even though we're seeing the literal manifestations around the world with global warming.
"It may all be over eventually, but I think it's going to take a while for us to destroy ourselves completely."
However, Cusack also admitted that action movies aren't his favourite films.
"I think some people just want to go out on a Saturday night and not think, and that's why they want to go see action movies," he said. "And you can have fairy tale romances where people meet their soulmates and everything's just fine and dandy forever.
"But life is much messier. So I kind of like the films that are funny but a bit edgier and reflect real life."
