Speaking to Metro, the Oscar-nominated actor insisted that the character-driven parts he takes on are more fulfilling than appearing in big budget fare.
He said: "Clearly, I don't look like Tom Cruise. The roles I get are going to fall inside a certain spectrum. I really feel I get the more interesting stuff.
"I always say, the great thing to be in the movie business is a white male character actor, because you can be bald and overweight and hairy. It's a huge relief, I don't have to think about my muscles and hair and all those things."
Cold Souls, which sees Giamatti play himself, is in cinemas from Friday.
