Hitchcock most deserving of Oscar

Alfred Hitchcock has been voted the most deserving director who should have won an Academy Award but has been denied of the accolade.

The poll, carried out by the Turner Classic Movies channel, saw the public declare the director of The Birds, Vertigo and Psycho as the most deserving director who has not won an Oscar, coming above Taxi Driver director Martin Scorsese and A Clockwork Orange creator Stanley Kubrick.

A spokesman for the channel said: "The poll shows an encouraging amount of support and loyalty from the UK public for many British actors and filmmakers."

The top ten most deserving directors:

2. Martin Scorsese
3. Stanley Kubrick
4. Ridley Scott
5. Tim Burton
6. Ingmar Bergman
7. Spike Lee
8. Mike Leigh
9. Howard Hawks
10. Roberto Rossellini

This year's Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday.
