Speaking to DS, Garai said that she admired Poliakoff for not treating his actors like "tools".
"He's one of the few directors I've worked with who has a great love for actors," she explained. "They're not the difficult tools, they enable him and help his creative process.
"Writer/directors are, for me, the most inspiring people to work for because they are the person on set that knows the answer to all the questions. They have the most invested in the project because they've been with it from conception."
Garia added that Poliakoff has an odd quirk on set that involves playing with drinking straws: "Stephen has a great deal of energy and he needs to have something to fiddle with. He has these plastic straws that he plays with, it's his trademark."
Poliakoff has previously compared Garai to Kate Winslet.
Glorious 39 is playing in London cinemas now and opens nationwide on Friday.
