The Oscar-winning director, who releases his adaptation of Alice Sebold's acclaimed novel in the US next month and the UK in January, told Reuters that early audiences "just weren't satisfied" with the fate of one of the characters. The story centres on the murder of a 14-year-old girl and her family's attempt to track down the killer.
"[The audience] wanted far more violence," said Jackson of the additional scenes, which show "more violence and suffering".
He continued: "We got a lot of people telling us that they were disappointed with this death scene, as they wanted to see [the character] in agony and suffer a lot more. We had to create a whole suffering death scene just to give people the satisfaction they needed."
The Lovely Bones, starring Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci, will debut as this year's Royal Film Performance on November 24.
