The writer-director of the low-budget horror told BBC Newsbeat that he had been a fan of Spielberg since he was a child.
Peli said: "At some point Steven Spielberg had to watch the movie to approve it and he was so unnerved by it that he stopped watching it halfway through and had to finish watching it in daylight the following day.
"He said it was one of the scariest movies he's ever seen and that he hasn't had that feeling of dread since seeing The Exorcist many years ago."
He added: "That was one of the [most] amazing things I've ever heard in my life.
"To hear the biggest director of all time, someone who's been a childhood hero of mine, give me such a compliment was amazing."
