The Mirror reports that the poll, carried out by rental company Lovefilm, discovered that Burn After Reading and Taken completed the top three.
Audiences were most likely to rent drama, but comedy was the next most popular genre.
Film fans also preferred movies made locally, with residents of Edinburgh most likely to watch Trainspotting, and The Full Monty most popular with people living in Sheffield.
Terry Pratchett's The Colour Of Magic was the most popular television DVD, followed by comedy series Gavin & Stacey.
Lovefilm's Fliss White said: "Staying in has indeed become the new going out throughout 2009, but it has actually suited film fans down to the ground as they've been spoilt by some of the best films of the last few years.
"Whilst Slumdog Millionaire was the real winner this year across the nation's homes, the success of comedies like the Coen Brothers's Burn After Reading shows that, despite the recession, us Brits are more than able to look on the brighter side of life."
