Earlier this year, Gilliam confirmed that he had restarted work on the project, but didn't reveal who had been cast in the movie.
However, in an interview with Collider, Duvall has strongly hinted that he will be starring in the resurrected film.
"I may work with Terry Gilliam next - if they get the money - to play Don Quixote de la Mancha," he said. "Totally amazing to work with Terry Gilliam. But, once again, the money. It's so difficult to get the money.
"[Terry] saw me play a Cuban barber one time with Richard Harris [in Wrestling Ernest Hemingway] and that's what gave him the idea to cast me as Don Quixote."
Colin Farrell was linked to the movie in September, though Gilliam later denied the rumours as online gossip.
The helmer began production on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in October 2000 with Johnny Depp in the lead role, but the project was abandoned when actor Jean Rochefort suffered a herniated disc and flash floods destroyed sets and equipment.
Gilliam's first ill-fated attempt at adapting the classic 17th century story was captured in 2002 documentary Lost In La Mancha.
