'Vera Drake' wins best film award

Mike Leigh's Vera Drake won the prize for best film at the annual Evening Standard British Film Awards last night.

The drama about a backstreet abortionist also earned eleven Bafta nominations and also nominations for the Academy Awards on February 27, where it could walk away with Oscars for best actress (Imelda Staunton), best direction and best screenplay.

Other winners included:
Peter Sellers Award for Comedy: Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead)
Best Actor: Paddy Considine (Dead Man's Shoes)
Alexander Walker special award: Tim Bevan & Eric Fellner (Working Title Films)
ITV London most promising newcomer: Emily Blunt & Nathalie Press (My Summer of Love)
Best Screenplay: Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love)
Technical Achievement: Roger Deakins (The Village, The Ladykillers
Evening Standard readers' film of the year: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
