The film tells the story of Jon Jett and Cherie Currie's journey from rebellious Californian teens to rock stars and leaders of the band The Runaways. Twilight star Kristen Stewart plays Jon and Dakota Fanning portrays Cherie.
"Floria has crafted a beautiful story of Joan and Cherie's tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as well as a kick-ass rock 'n' roll journey," said Apparition head Bob Berney in a statement.
The Runaways is Sigismondi's first feature film. She has directed music videos for Christina Aguilera, David Bowie and The White Stripes.
The film is due to open sometime in 2010.
