The Lethal Weapon 3 actress will play Frigga in the Marvel adaptation, which sees Chris Hemsworth take on the role of the Norse hero. Russo's character is the queen of Asgard and mother of Thor and Loki, the villain to be played by Tom Hiddleston.
Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Stuart Townsend, Jaimie Alexander and Kat Dennings are among the actors signed up to appear in the Paramount movie.
Thor will open in cinemas on May 20, 2011.
