The 19-year-old said that he "fell in love" with Matt Greenhalgh's script for the movie, which tells the story of the Beatle growing up as a teenager in Liverpool.
"To begin with when I read the script I just fell in love with it there," Johnson told DS. "I related to the character and jumped into it naively not really thinking about it. It was only a couple of weeks before we were going to film in Liverpool that I said to myself, 'Oh f**k, what kind of shoes am I going to jump into'."
Johnson added that his biggest fear about taking on the role was not being able to master the guitar.
"One of the things that scared me the most was not being a musician," he explained. "I wanted to knuckle down and feel confident when I was filming those scenes playing with the band."
