'Avatar' retains Aus box office top spot

James Cameron's sci-fi action movie holds off competition from Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes to secure the number one slot over the Christmas weekend.
Avatar's $12 million gross is more than double that of Holmes, which is one of seven new entries in the top ten.
Alvin And The Chipmunks 2, Old Dogs and Did You Hear About The Morgans? round out the top five, while The Lovely Bones bows at number seven. Jane Campion's Bright Star lands at eight on pre-release screenings and Bollywood film 3 Idiots follows at nine.
