The biopic, which is based on Andrew Lycett's book Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond, takes place in the years of the author's life that inspired him to create the British secret agent. Fleming served as a Naval intelligence officer during World War II and worked as a journalist for Reuters before going on to write Casino Royale in 1953.
Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films are behind the $40 million project, which is being scripted by Matt Brown.
McAvoy can next be seen opposite Helen Mirren in The Last Station, opening in UK cinemas on February 19.
