The South African-born director told the Los Angeles Times that his next film, which has secured financing from Media Rights Capital, will be another sci-fi project.
"It is science fiction and it has many sociopolitical ideas that interest me," Blomkamp said. "Those ideas are wrapped up inside something that is like a Hollywood action film."
The filmmaker noted that he intends to keep the budget for the untitled picture lower than traditional blockbusters: "This next movie will cost more than District 9 but it will cost much, much less than the big summer films. You can do a lot for less now."
Blomkamp also confirmed that he has turned down several offers to helm high-cost Hollywood productions because he wants to hang on to creative control on his movies.
"I've been offered films - a lot of films, in fact - with seriously high budgets, and I've turned them all down," he said. "Once the budgets get bigger, you can't do what you want as a director, unless you're Peter Jackson or James Cameron."
