The film is based on the true life story of Aron Ralston, a mountaineer who lost an arm in a 2003 climbing accident, reports Empire.
Ralston's right arm was reportedly pinned to a rock wall in Utah for 127 hours until he hacked it off with a dull knife.
Franco is expected to star as Ralston.
Boyle is writing the script with Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy.
Filming is due to begin in Utah in March.
