The studio had initially decided against supporting Duncan Jones's science fiction drama, claiming that a campaign, which involves sending out screener discs to Academy voters, would open the film up to piracy.
Director Jones started a grassroots push for the film via Twitter, hoping to bring star Sam Rockwell's performance to the attention of Oscar voters.
Writing on his Twitter page today, Jones confirmed that Sony's awards plans for the film have changed: "Big news on the screeners front... The powers that be will be doing a series of Academy screenings in LA! Guess that's something."
Jones added that he hopes to persuade the studio to issue 'For Your Consideration' adverts in Hollywood-based publications.
"Next stop... Convincing the buggers to let voters know we are eligible by putting some ads out in the trades!" he said.
