According to The AP, both filmmakers join first-time nominees Jason Reitman, Lee Daniels and Kathryn Bigelow on the nomination list.
Cameron's Avatar, Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Reitman's Up in the Air, Daniels's Precious and Bigelow's The Hurt Locker have all been nominated for the prize.
Insiders speculated that the director who wins the DGA award is likely to take home the 'Best Director' Oscar, as Danny Boyle did for Slumdog Millionaire.
The Directors Guild Awards will be handed out at a banquet on January 30.
