Joshua Dallas, who appeared in recent horror film The Descent: Part 2 will take over from Townsend in the role of Asgardian warrior Fandral.
According to Ain't It Cool News, Townsend was released from the comic book project after arriving six hours late for a screen test.
The Irish actor was famously dismissed from the cast of Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings trilogy and replaced by Viggo Mortensen before filming commenced in 1999.
Kennth Branagh's Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, is due out in cinemas in May 2011.
