The Irish filmmaker, who directed Day-Lewis in My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer, said that he enjoyed a "great rapport" with the Oscar-winning actor.
"We never really had conflicts. I trust him and the alchemy between people is not something that is rational," Sheridan told DS. "We just had a great rapport and I loved him. I think he's a poet and probably is one of the greatest - I don't want to say Daniel's the greatest actor in the world - he's my mate but if you said it to me I wouldn't disagree."
Sheridan, whose new movie Brothers opens this week in the UK, added that he hopes to announce a new project with Day-Lewis "pretty soon".
"We're always trying to bring something to work together on," he remarked. "I think we might."
