The pioneering sci-fi epic - already the second-highest grossing film of all-time - won the Best Film (Drama) Prize, while its writer/director/co-producer James Cameron was named Best Director.
Meanwhile, The Hangover collected the award for Best Film (Comedy).
Meryl Streep won her seventh Golden Globe after being named Best Actress (Comedy) for Julie & Julia, while Sandra Bullock picked up her first after winning the equivalent award for Drama.
At 60, veteran actor Jeff Bridges also became a first-time winner after collecting the Best Actor (Drama) trophy for Crazy Heart, while Robert Downey, Jr. took home the Best Actor (Comedy) award for Sherlock Holmes - the third Golden Globe of his career, but first in a movie category.
The Best Supporting Actor and Actress gongs were won by Mo'nique and Christoph Waltz - for Precious and Inglourious Basterds respectively.
However, several British actors - including Helen Mirren, Colin Firth and Emily Blunt - left the ceremony at Los Angeles' Beverley Hilton Hotel empty-handed.
