Hicks: 'Brit, Aussie actors are real men'

Rex Features

Director Scott Hicks has suggested that British actors are tougher than their US counterparts.

The Australian filmmaker praised his Boys Are Back star Clive Owen and fellow countrymen Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Eric Bana for having a more grounded sensibility than American stars.

"It seems to me that the English and the Australian sensibility, they're real men, real blokes. In America there's something else that swirls through," he said. "There are great American movie stars, your Brad Pitts, Tom Cruises… you just feel they're blokes."

Asked if he thought fame and celebrity played a part in the differing outlooks, Hicks told DS: "Possibly. There's a real sense of grounding in some of these men, and some of it is about training. Someone like Clive - how he's come up through theatre and TV and made critical choices at critical moments to move on into another medium with incredible success.

"It's not happened by accident. He's learnt his craft, taken everything he can from that medium... the easiest path is to stay in series TV forever. He said, 'No, I don't want to do that, I want to do this'. He moves on, he's clever."

The Boys Are Back opens in UK cinemas this Friday.
