'Avatar' pulled from Chinese cinemas
Published Tuesday, Jan 19 2010, 23:52 GMT | By Mike Moody
The Golden Globe winner is to be replaced by a biopic based on the life of Confucius starring Chow-Yun Fat, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The government has not stated why the film has been ordered off 2D screens. Avatar is still playing in many of China's 3D theatres.
A Hong Kong newspaper speculated that the Chinese government is opposed to the film's politics, especially the idea that indigenous people are uprooted from their homes.
It has also been suggested that the movie is taking up too much of the Chinese cinema industry's market share. Traditionally, domestic films take the place of foreign films in the nation's cinemas at the start of the Chinese New Year.
