The Inkheart star suggested to Parade that the format will survive the criticism some have levelled at it.
Fraser said: "I've been in a few 3D movies myself. And being a wannabe geek and techno-nerd, I was blown away by the result. You're right in the thick of it.
"And to get the effect you have to go to the theatre, not stay at home and watch on an iPod or a TV screen. It really is like riding a roller coaster. And there's no telling how far we can go after Avatar."
He added: "3D is it, after we survive the naysayers. When sound was added to motion pictures back in the '20s with The Jazz Singer, they were like, 'It's a talkie. Who's going to go to that?'.
"Then they brought in colour and it was, 'We like black and white. Why does it have to be in colour?'. 'Television? Who's going to watch TV?'. Well, now we watch so much TV that people stopped going to the theatres. I'm telling you, 3D is going to bring people back."
