The John Landis-directed film centres on killers William Hare (Serkis) and William Burke (Simon Pegg), who sold the corpses of 17 people they had murdered to the city's medical college for research purposes.
Pegg revealed the casting change on his Twitter page, writing: "David Tennant had to drop out of B&H but by sheer glorious serendipity a legend of Middle Earth and Skull Island has come aboard. Welcome AS."
Serkis today scooped a 'Best Leading Actor' BAFTA nomination for his role as Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.
