The Hawaiian-born actor, who has a part in HBO's upcoming series Game Of Thrones, shot several test scenes with Conan director Marcus Nispel that impressed backers Lionsgate and Nu Image/Millennium, reports Deadline Hollywood.
Momoa, 30, held off competition from Twilight's Kellan Lutz and Jared Padalecki for the coveted warrior role, and will begin work on the movie next month in Bulgaria.
According to a report on Latino Review, Mickey Rourke has been offered the part of Conan's father Corin.
Hollywood previously turned Robert E. Howard's pulp creation into an '80s film franchise with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the eponymous warrior.
