The movie, first released in 1937, has subsequently been reworked twice over the years. Judy Garland and James Mason starred in the 1957 version, and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson featured in its 1976 update.
Actor-turned-director Nick Cassavettes is helming the musical's latest incarnation and has now inked a deal with Warner Bros ahead of its planned release in 2012, WENN reports.
As well as Downey Jr, Mad Men star John Hamm, Alicia Keys and Rihanna are rumoured to appear.
