The Oscar-nominated actor has said that he took on the role of Captain Leo Davidson because he wanted to "grow" as an actor.
Wahlberg told Total Film: "I didn't necessarily think Planet Of The Apes would be the best movie to remake, but I wanted to work with Tim Burton.
"At that point, I was choosing roles that allowed me to grow, to learn from great artists."
The 38-year-old also claimed that he managed to transition from his original career as a singer and model to acting because he took the filmmaking craft very seriously.
He said: "I was committed 110 per cent. It was like, 'Oh I'll just try this'. I was obsessed with acting, making movies, studying film 24 hours a day."
As for being considered for Ang Lee's Academy Award-winning movie Brokeback Mountain, Wahlberg added: "I was never offered it. I had a meeting with Ang Lee and I read 15 pages of script, but I was never given the opportunity to say yes or no."
