Studio 20th Century Fox has reportedly come out on top of a bidding war to secure the domestic distribution rights to Robert Rodriguez's Machete.

Based on the director's fake trailer for 2008's Grindhouse, the film has since attracted widespread studio interest with Paramount and Lionsgate among the unsuccessful bidders for the title, Variety reports.

The movie, which stars Danny Trejo as a violent Mexican ex-federal who is double-crossed by a corrupt politician, was initially financed by Overnight Productions, who later sold off the international rights to Sony as well as several local territory distributors to cover the film's production costs.

Rodriguez wrote the script with longtime associate Ethan Maniquis, before completing filming last autumn in Austin, TX. A host of stars were involved in the project, with Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and Steven Seagal all due to appear.

Rodriguez and Maniquis also co-directed the movie.
